An illustrated book project focused on highlighting stories of minority youth in Minnesota who are bringing positive light into their communities.
From as early as I can remember, I have loved hearing other people's stories. It has always inspired me to see what pieces of them connect to pieces of me. As I set out to become an illustrator, one of the most beautiful parts of the work I got to create was in the storytelling. As a black woman, I have struggled with having my voice heard. I always knew my story had purpose, but I wished I had more black artists that I could look up. And because of this wish, I have desired to find ways to share other people's light, specifically within BIPOC communities.
This project,"A Little Light" is just the beginning of the type of stories I hope to share. Within you will find stories from young women local to Minneapolis. I wanted to give a platform and voice to these young women who are using their lives and work to forge change and shine light into their local communities. By creating this book, I am doing a small part in amplifying voices that are often overlooked. Each story is a beacon of light and can inspire both young and old. Take what you need. Enjoy.
This book includes stories, poems, full color illustrations as well as coloring pages.
A percentage of all sales from this project will be donated to local organizations that focus on empowering communities of color.
